In a tragic turn of events, a 12-year-old boy named Nico Antic has passed away in the hospital after suffering severe injuries from a shark attack in Sydney. His family recently confirmed the heartbreaking news, which has left many in the community mourning.
Nico was a vibrant young boy who loved sports and had a friendly disposition. He was known for his generous spirit and zest for life, and this is how his family wishes to remember him. On January 18, while enjoying a day at Shark Beach in Vaucluse, located in Sydney's eastern suburbs, he was attacked by a shark that bit both of his legs. Despite the urgent care he received, his condition remained critical until his passing.
In a heartfelt statement, Nico’s parents, Lorena and Juan, expressed their profound sadness: "We are heartbroken to share that our son, Nico, has passed away. He was always full of life, and that’s how we’ll remember him." They extended their gratitude to the first responders and medical staff at Sydney Children’s Hospital for their dedicated efforts to save him. Additionally, they acknowledged the overwhelming support from the community, which has been a source of comfort during this unimaginably difficult time.
Following the incident, a GoFundMe campaign was launched to assist Nico’s family, raising nearly $240,000 as of Saturday afternoon. This financial support is a testament to the love and solidarity from the community. Among those sharing condolences was Kate Barley, whose own son, Khai Cowley, tragically lost his life in a shark attack last year. She reached out to Nico’s family with an emotional message, emphasizing the shared pain of losing a child.
Nico was actively involved in the North Bondi Surf Life Saving Club, participating in the Nippers program, where he had recently earned an award for most improved in the under-11 boys’ category. The attack occurred outside the shark net enclosure while he was swimming near Shark Beach. Friends who were with him jumped into action, with at least one friend entering the water to help pull him to safety, as noted by Superintendent Joe McNulty from NSW Police’s marine area command.
Authorities believe that a bull shark was responsible for the attack, marking this incident as part of a concerning trend. In just 48 hours, there were three additional shark bites reported along the New South Wales coast, escalating fears among beachgoers and prompting the closure of nearly 30 beaches. The recent rise in shark activity has been linked to unusual environmental conditions resulting from heavy rainfall, which has disturbed the waters along the coastline.
This situation raises significant concerns among surfers and swimmers alike, leading to the cancellation of swimming events and increasing anxiety regarding ocean safety. Although all beaches were reopened prior to the long weekend, Manly Beach faced closures again due to further shark sightings.
