Tarique Rahman: The Rise of Bangladesh's Next Prime Minister
The controversial figure set to become Bangladesh's next Prime Minister has a history of political intrigue and family ties.
Tarique Rahman, the son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, is set to become the next leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). But his path to the top has been far from conventional, marked by accusations of nepotism and a long exile from his home country.
Rahman first entered the political arena in the early 2000s, during his mother's second term as Prime Minister. With a background in military rule and a legacy of political struggle, the BNP was a powerful force in Bangladesh's political landscape.
A 'Hatchet Man' and Accusations of Corruption
In 2002, Rahman took on a senior role within the party, but his rise was met with criticism. The opposition labeled it as brazen nepotism, and Rahman earned a reputation as a 'hatchet man' for enforcing party discipline. He has also faced accusations of using his power for personal gain, though he has consistently denied any corruption allegations.
Exile and Return
In 2007, Rahman was arrested on corruption charges and spent 18 months in prison. He claimed he was tortured during his time in custody. After his release, he left the country for London, where he lived in exile for 17 years. During this time, he continued to influence BNP strategy and policies, serving as the party's acting chairman since his mother's imprisonment in 2018.
A Controversial Return
Rahman finally returned to Bangladesh in December 2025, just five days before his mother's passing. His return sparked renewed accusations of nepotism, but former BNP commerce minister Amir Khasru defended the family's legacy, arguing that the BNP had been stifled by the Hasina regime, making it difficult to elect a new leader outside the Zia family.
The True Test of Leadership
The true test of Rahman's leadership will be how he navigates the future of his party and the country. Political analyst Mohiuddin Ahmed suggests that Rahman's experience in the 'dark corners of politics' and the 'politics of conflict and revenge' will be crucial in shaping his leadership.
