The commission came from Eusebi Güell, Gaudí’s devoted patron and a prominent figure in the cement industry, who owned the mines and needed a place for his skilled workforce.
For a long time, the architectural community suspected Gaudí's touch. The chalet's design subtly hinted at his unique style, with naturalistic elements that mimicked the forms of plants and animals. These very elements would later become hallmarks of his more famous creations, like the whimsical Park Güell and the enchanting Casa Batllò in Barcelona. Even the distinctive pointed arch structure seems to foreshadow the awe-inspiring Sagrada Família, Gaudí's unfinished magnum opus.
But here's where it gets fascinatingly complex... While the visual clues were strong, solid proof remained elusive until now. The Catalan culture minister, Sònia Hernández Almodóvar, hailed the attribution as a triumph of "rigorous research" that significantly enhances our understanding of Catalonia's rich heritage. However, Santana wisely points out that this attribution is primarily for the initial stages of the project. And this is the part most people miss... Gaudí passed away on June 10, 1926, at the age of 73, after a tragic accident involving a tram in Barcelona. The Sagrada Família, a project he poured the latter part of his life into, is still under construction over 140 years after it began in 1882. The recent installation of the final elements on its central tower is set to dramatically alter Barcelona's skyline.
Interestingly, the Sagrada Família's completion, particularly the central Jesus Christ tower which will reach 172.5 meters, will make it Barcelona's tallest building. It already holds the title of the world's tallest church! The project, initially funded by devout patrons and now largely by tourism, has seen its pace quicken thanks to Barcelona's popularity as a tourist destination, especially after the 1992 Olympic Games.
Yet, the path to completion is not without its challenges. The Glory facade is expected to take another 10 years, and a significant hurdle remains: the grand entrance stairway, a key element of Gaudí's original design. Building it now would require relocating 10,000 people and demolishing approximately 3,000 apartments – a complex social and urban planning puzzle.
