A shocking family drama is unfolding in the Delhi High Court, where a bitter inheritance battle has taken an ugly turn. The court has expressed its dismay at the public display of family disputes, referring to it as "washing dirty linen in public."
The case involves Rani Kapur, the grieving mother of late businessman Sunjay Kapur, and his third wife, Priya Kapur. They are locked in a legal battle over a staggering Rs 30,000 crore fortune left behind after Sunjay's untimely death in June 2022.
But here's where it gets controversial... Rani Kapur alleges that Priya Kapur, with the collusion of her son, has engaged in fraudulent activities to unlawfully divert the family's wealth into a trust. The court, in its observations, highlighted the need for mediation, urging all parties, including Sunjay's second wife, actor Karisma Kapoor, and their children, to find a peaceful resolution.
The legal proceedings began with Rani Kapur filing a civil suit against the RK Family Trust, a trust allegedly created in October 2017. Rani Kapur claims that she was coerced into signing documents while grieving her son's death and wants the trust declared illegal, void, and the result of fraud and undue influence.
A complex web of deceit? Rani Kapur's suit paints a picture of a carefully orchestrated scheme. It alleges that through a series of illegal transactions, all of Rani's assets were secretly transferred into the RK Family Trust without her knowledge or consent. The suit further claims that the entire fraud was only discovered after Sunjay's mysterious death, which Rani hints was a result of a "transnational conspiracy."
Sunjay Kapur, aged 53, passed away while playing polo in London on June 12, 2022. While the official cause of death was listed as a cardiac arrest, there were reports of an anaphylactic shock triggered by a bee entering his mouth. Rani Kapur's dark hints of a "murder" have added a layer of intrigue to an already complex situation.
According to the suit, Rani Kapur is the sole beneficiary and legatee of her husband Surinder Kapur's estate. Surinder, the founder and promoter of the Sona Group, passed away in June 2015, and his will was probated in January 2016 without objection from Sunjay Kapur.
However, the suit alleges that after Rani suffered a stroke in September 2017, she became dependent on her son and Priya, who allegedly took advantage of her vulnerable state to divert her assets into the RK Family Trust.
And this is the part most people miss... The court's intervention is not just about resolving a legal dispute but also about preserving family harmony and ensuring that the significant wealth God blessed the family with is enjoyed by everyone, as the court put it. It's a reminder that sometimes, the most valuable inheritance is not monetary but the love and respect within a family.
